Set in the tumultuous pre-Independence days in Kolkata, Gora focuses on the conflict within Indian society. On the one side are staunch Hindus who believe that following rituals is an essential part of ensuring a stable future for the country, and on the other are the members of the progressive Brahmo Samaj, who equate modernisation with a rejection of Hindu beliefs.
